It’s time to news a bit about AMD’s future high-end graphics card. Some pictures of a CrossFire setup made up of two Radeon HD 7970 popped up recently (yesterday):
On the second picture, we can see two 8-pin power connectors on the HD 7970 PCB. That means that the board can have a max power consumption of 375W. But it’s not really clear on the pictures and it seems that the cards are fed by some 6-pin power connectors…
Here are some possible specifications of the Radeon HD 7970:
– PCI-Express 3.0
– GPU: 2048 shader processors @ 1000MHz, 28nm TSMC
– Memory: 2GB XDR2
– Texture units: 128
– ROPs: 64
– Power consumption: 190W
And some take-them-with-a-pinch-of-salt benchmarks like this one also appeared:

So I am guessing, HD 7970 ~ performing same as GTX 590. What happened to XDR2? 🙁
XDR2 was highly unlikely from the get go. Too bad the speculations mentioned in this article came from the same source as the XDR2 info, making those highly unlikely as well.
My take is that it’s probably going to by way less. Why? Because we know GCN is going to be more like Fermi, and Fermi requires about a third the shaders to achieve the same performance. Taking frequency into account 2048 shaders would mean we’d suddenly get almost 3 x the shader performance. If AMD can suddenly cram that kind of power in a reasonably sized die, along with the wider bus, AMD and nVidia have made some very, very poor designs for the past 10 years…
PURE FAKE!!!! LOL
I’d like to suggest taking a bit better look in the card pictures – they have 8+6pin, not 8+8pin, even though the PCB has soldering points for 8+8pin.
It’s not rare to have soldering points for 8-pins even when you’re using 6-pins, and I’d also like to point out that for example Cypress (HD5800) ES cards had 8+6pin connectors, while retails had 6+6pin
There’s a newer Tahiti-card picture out there too, with 6+6pin, which means it’s either 7950 (and that rumors of 7950 would have cut down mem bandwidth are false), or that 7970 will retail with 6+6pin, similar to how 5800 had 8+6pin in ES and 6+6 in retail
For the GPGPU GRID, a test with Radeon 7970 and Folding@Home it’s possible ?
