Few days after Heaven 4.0, Unigine Corps publishes its new graphics benchmark Valley for Windows, Linux and OSX:
Valley Benchmark is a new GPU stress-testing tool from the developers of the very popular and highly acclaimed Heaven Benchmark. The forest-covered valley surrounded by vast mountains amazes with its scale from a bird’s-eye view and is extremely detailed down to every leaf and flower petal. As usual, I did a quick test with a GTX 680 and a HD 7970. I don’t understand why the presets of Valley benchmark (same thing for Heaven 4.0) are not in fullscreen but it doesn’t matter, custom settings are fortunately available!
Testbed and graphics drivers:
– Radeon HD 7970: Catalyst 13.1 WHQL.
– GeForce GTX 680: R313.96.

I don’t know how to interpret the bad OpenGL score of the Radeon card… Unigine engine ? Catalyst 13.1 ? …
AMD always had a bit bigger perf loss between DX and OGL than Nvidia.
Also Nvidia IS ACTIVEALY improving their Linux drivers (which share OpenGL code with Windows one, which improve Windows drivers scores).
Some of that work is trivial, some is not. But it add up preatty nicely for big OpenGL score.
You can check it by running Valley on Linux too.

Hmm raindrops on lens look unrealistic and do I see a slight soft poping of objects or is it just in the video?

I’ll post my score later, but I’ll add this now, on Linux the Extreme HD test drops from >14fps to ~4fps after test 7 and stays there. All the other settings tend to be on par Windows vs. Linux and DX11 vs OGL. GTX460.
I’ve been waiting for this since late 2011 and it was worth the wait. The only problem I have with this is the sound design… the sound fades don’t match the screen fades and are quite abrupt. Plus the whole nature soundtrack is very looped. Graphics 10/10, sounds 7/10, music is okay.

No, it´s your mistake. The scores/fps that he was showing are about extreme preset (not the extreme HD preset) and a 1080p+ultra+4xAA custom preset (“equal” to the extreme HD preset, but using 4xAA and not 8xAA).
It makes very sense. It´s overhauling the use of 8xAA for a very little quality improvement.

~90% scaling is not bad for the sli system. I should test the single 5850 to see how cfx scales.
I wonder what Titan will score. I am guessing around 90fps.

Looks pretty good given current state of real-time rendering on commodity hardware, but having said that, barely anything impresses me anymore as real-time rendering has not made any major leaps over the past couple of years as it did in the first half of the previous decade. It has been all but minor improvements ever since. Global illumination, with at least a handful of bounces, is what we truly need. That is The One challenge that real-time rendering is facing right now, and until that is a solved problem, everything is going to look fake and cartoony.
